In the 18th century shackles were often used on African slave ships to immobilize the slaves. This was mainly due to African slaves outnumbering the guards so shackles kept rebellious slaves from resisting. These hand forged iron bar style hand cuff comes with a padlock and 2 keys. An iron bar slides through two eyelet style shackles and are locked at the end with a hand forged padlock. This style of shackles was most often used as leg restraints but could also be used to restrain the hands if needed. This is also where the term put in irons comes from.
