SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS Rare 2006 Promo Goin' Crazy Skateboard

$ 80.00

Rare 2006 Nickelodeon Nicktoons SpongeBob SquarePants "Goin' Crazy" Promotional Skateboard in original box.

There seems to be very little info online about this skateboard. Apparently a small number of these were sent out in late 2006 and early 2007 to a handful of people who had recently added the Nicktoons Network to their cable or DirectTV packages. Those don't appear to have been an advertised promotion, contest, etc. as at least some recipients were confused when they arrived. Some may have also been given as prizes at the Nickelodeon Resort / Nick Hotel which opened in 2005, perhaps as a promotion for the 5th anniversary of the Nicktoons Network.

The design doesn't appear to have been one that was ever sold commercially. Bravo appears to have marketed at least a couple of SpongeBob skateboards in late 2007 to the UK market but similar boards don't appear to have been offered in the US until 2009 as a tie in with SpongeBob's 10th anniversary. It seems likely that this promo batch was created as an early test run.

Double tail 28 inch wooden skateboard deck measuring 0.5 inch thick. Full gripped top, large SpongeBob Goin' Crazy design on bottom and custom imprinted wheels.

Manufacturer's sticker is still on the bottom indicates that it was manufactured for Nickelodeon by Bravo Sports. However, confusingly, the tiny (couldn't get clear photos) text on the bottom of the board indicates a 2005 Mattel copyright. A separate 'tiny text' section notes SpongeBob characters, design, etc. are property of Viacom and includes a Created by Stephen Hillenburg byline.

CONDITION

The board doesn't seem to have ever been ridden. There is no wear or marks on the grip or the wheels, no scuffs to the edges, etc. The board apparently came wrapped in plastic which was applied before the trucks were attached as bits of it remain around the trucks and under one of the screws on the top side.

There are some marks on the bottom center right. These are not scuffs. The bottom design appears to have been given a secondary acrylic or plasticized coating which, presumably in addition to protecting the design from wear and tear, makes it shinier and adds depth. The grey spots seen in the photos are damage to that coating layer, likely occurring either when the plastic wrap was applied or removed. The design itself beneath doesn't appear damaged, so it's likely that someone with knowledge of the coating process could restore or repair the coating in those spots to perfection. Not having any such knowledge, it is being sold as-is.

The illustrated box has light wear from years of storage but no tears or other notable damage.
